Not everyone 'needs' broadband right now
43% of UK adults who are currently unconnected to the web would remain unconnected even if they were given a free PC and broadband, according to Ofcom.
30% of the UK population doesn’t yet have Internet access at home. Main reason is lack of interest or need (42%). These people tend to be older and retired, with 61% having never used a computer.
15% say that broadband is too expensive, while 8% state the cost of a computer is prohibitive.
A point to be made here is rather simple, but designers and developers often ignore it. Just because a product is available, people aren't going to use it. Generally, people have to see that it meets a current 'need' in their lives, or see that it facilitates something they already do.
For those in the UK, remember the Millennium Dome?
