Streaming live video from iPhone 3GS
Technically, no one is supposed to have such an app on their iPhone that lets them stream video because Apple has not allowed any of live-streaming apps into the App Store. But clearly, some users are able to do this.
Undoubtedly this restriction is due in part to how AT&T does not want live streaming video taking up valuable bandwidth, and it is also widely reported thatAT&T prohibits iPhone apps like the Sling Player from streaming video over its 3G networks due to bandwidth concerns.
According to TechCrunch, AT&T has been working to overhaul its 3G network, upgrading to High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) which can run at 7.2 Mbps — which the new iPhone will work with. This won’t start happening until later on this year.
I think Apple and the iPhone are great, but reading the amount of criticism this week about the 3GS and AT&T is interesting. You really would think that they could have sorted this out.
